Hydroelectric power (hydro) is an important renewable and carbon-free source in Great Britain.
However, it has limited power in Great Britain and can therefore generate a limited amount of electricity.
At present Hydroelectric power is responsible for about 2% of GB's electricity supply. The performance of hydro is relatively stable and predictable, and generation usually agrees well with National Grid forecasts.
According to the National Grid's Five Year Forecast and longer-term outlook capacity and generation will not significantly increase.
